About gifts in Wills

Did you know only 7% of people leave a gift in their Will? However many charities could not carry on without the support of people who give in this special way.

You may not have sat down and considered writing your Will. However, if you have a family and loved ones, this is a good opportunity to take a few moments out of our busy lives to think about it. At Action for Children, without the hundreds of gifts in Wills we receive each year, we wouldn't be able to help as many children as we do today. These gifts enable us to continue developing new innovative services to meet the needs of tomorrow's children.

Gifts left in Wills don't have to be large amounts. They don't even have to be money - some people leave us things like antiques, or even jewellery. However you choose to donate, it'll support our work immediately, helping us protect more vulnerable children.

How to leave a gift in Your will

  1. Make a list or use our simple Will planner – make a list of who you’d like to include in your Will, such as family members, friends and perhaps charities too. If you are kind enough to consider leaving us a gift in your Will, please make sure to discuss your plans with your family first.
  2. Think about how much you’d like to give – anyone can leave a gift in their Will, no matter how large or small, it will make a huge difference to lives of children that we help.
  3. Will-writing services – we have partnered with Farewill and the Goodwill Partnership to offer supporters the chance to have their Will written or amended at free of charge.
  4. Talk to a solicitor – you’ll find a list of solicitors in your area on the Law Society website.

Types of gifts:

  • Pecuniary gift – specific amount of money e.g. £100
  • Residuary gift – percentage of your residue, what is left of your estate following other gifts, debts   and fees, e.g. 5% of your residue.
  • Specific gift – Specific item e.g. jewellery, antiques or collectables.

Already have a Will? You can easily still leave us a gift, simply add in a small clause using a codicil form.

I chose to leave a gift in my Will to Action for Children as I believe that all children are the future. I am lucky to have 3 daughters and 5 grandchildren who are fit and well, so it is important to me to help those children who are not so fortunate.

Growing up I sadly witnessed horrendous domestic abuse, which has impacted on me my whole life. That’s why I decided to leave a legacy to Action for Children because I don’t want other children to experience what I did. I want children to be safe and loved.
