Can you imagine how it feels to be five years old hiding behind a couch scared?

Amy* faced years of abuse every night.

Amy would hide with her hands over her ears. “When I did run out, he turned on me. He used to slap and punch me. And then if he wasn’t hitting me, he would be screaming in my ears.”

As a teenager, the torment would come back to haunt her and she started cutting herself to cover the pain.

“I don’t like thinking about my childhood now. I don’t think I had one. You are supposed to have fun, live life to the best, but I didn’t get the chance to do that.”

Amy didn’t choose her childhood, but you can choose to support children like her. You can protect a scared young child like Amy from another vicious attack.

Just £5 a month could pay for a case worker to help a child in crisis.

For hundreds of thousands of children in the UK, childhood hurts. Vulnerable children are being ignored, left without support to face abuse and neglect, domestic abuse, deprivation and poor mental health. These children have no choice over their circumstances. But we can choose to help them. That’s why we’re launching our Choose Childhood campaign to inspire the public to support our work and help children in crisis.

Amy reached out to Action for Children and we provided her with supported living and a new look on life.

Amy wants you to hear this, but for her protection, we have changed her name.

Why choose Action for Children?

We protect and support children and young people, providing practical and emotional care and support, ensuring their voices are heard, and campaigning to bring lasting improvements to their lives.
