Chris Wall - Royal Parks

Chris pushed himself to the limit yesterday (9th October) by taking part in the 8th Royal Parks Half Marathon!

Chris Wall from Surrey, ran the Royal Parks Half Marathon yesterday for his son, Finley who receives residential care and support from us. Finley was born with Cerebral palsy and as a result has severe learning difficulties and displays challenging behaviour, which can be hard to control as he is non-verbal and experiences difficulties with communication.

In 2015, Chris and his wife, Louise, sought the advice of their local social services, who suggested Action for Children’s Pastens Residential Care. Pastens provides residential care for young people with profound and multiple disabilities, including communication difficulties and challenging behaviour.

Chris, 49, said: “As home life was becoming difficult for Finley, it became apparent that we could not meet his needs.”

Finley moved to the Surrey-based centre in January 2015, when he was 13-years-old, and has since taken up permanent residency.

"The staff at Action for Children are fantastic and always enthusiastic with Finley. His school work has improved dramatically, as he is more relaxed, and it’s all down to Pastens meeting his needs."

“There is not a day that goes by that I don’t miss Finley, but I know the decision to move him to Pastens was the best thing that could have happened to him. He is much more content because his needs are being met.”Chris adds.

Chris, who has spoken about his experiences of training for the event and what motivates him, says: “I’ve been training for this event for four months, running two to three times a week. I’m not trying to win, but I want to run with a smile on my face and enjoy the experience.”

Mark Gambril, Children’s Service Manager at Action for Children, said: “We are thrilled that Chris represented Action for Children out on the marathon course. On behalf of all the staff at Pastens, I would like to thank him for his unwavering support.”
