John O’Brien, Chair of Trustees, hosted this year’s Annual Reunion at Methodist Central Hall, Westminster. He welcomed about 80 guests who came together for laughter, lunch and more on June 16.

Carol Iddon, Interim Chief Executive, gave a presentation about our recent work, which included our Partnership with Royal Mail, our work with the victims of the Grenfell fire, and our collaboration with the Methodist Church.

Deanna Nielson, our Safeguarding Manager, followed with a presentation on the latest updates regarding the Child Migration Report.

After a buffet lunch, one of our Young Ambassadors, Lauren Thomas, from Wales, delivered a Q & A Session alongside Siobhan Corria, our Head of Inclusion. Lauren, a young mum, spoke about how Action for Children changed her life through the support she has received.

The closing presentation was delivered by the Reverend John Travell, who paid tribute to Mary Russell, a former Methodist Sister from Alvestoke, who has been supporting and fundraising for Action for Children for over 70 years. During that time, she has raised over £100,000.

Guests enjoyed an exhibition, open throughout the day, about the Bonner Road Home, which transported audiences on a journey from the conception of the National Children’s Home (NCH) to how it lives on today as Action for Children.

Reflecting on event, Helen Lavelle, our Stakeholder Communications Manager, said: “It was very moving to hear the stories of the Old Boys and Girls from their time in the care of the NCH and how much they appreciate the care they received.”

“The Annual Reunion gives them a chance to catch up with their ‘NCH family’ and to hear about the great work that Action for Children continues to do for children, young people and families today.”

John added: “I was delighted to again host this year’s Annual Reunion for our Old Boys and Girls. It’s wonderful to see so many former residents of our homes get together and catch up with each other.”

The next Annual Reunion has already been booked to return to the same venue on Saturday 6 July 2019.
