Sharing our expertise: webinars on neglect

On the 24th and 31st October Action for Children hosted two webinars on neglect, focusing on our findings and lessons we have learnt through our research with the University of Stirling. They are available to view online now.

Child neglect is the most common form of child abuse in the UK today; with up to one in 10 children suffering from neglect. 73% of children know another child who is suffering from neglect but are reluctant to approach an adult as they are unsure whether they are trustworthy, a ‘safe’ adult to talk to, or whether they have enough training to help. 

Our first webinar, What makes services accessible for neglected children and their families?, looked at:

  • Children’s experiences of neglect and what prevents them from seeking help
  • The experience of parents and whether they are able to seek help
  • Recommendations for practice

 This webinar is of interest to anyone in services for vulnerable children and their families; particularly front line professionals, service commissioners and policy professionals.

 In our research we also found that,

 ‘Some children are told by their parents not to tell or talk to other adults – so it’s up to the adults who work with children to notice’ (Practitioner).

Our second webinar, Giving vulnerable children and young people a voice in research, focused on:

  • How we involved children and young people in our neglect research
  • Our learning from the research process
  • How children and young people might be involved when developing your own research, policy and practice.

This webinar is aimed at anyone interested in involving children and young people in research and recommendations for practice.
