John O’Brien


John was appointed in September 2012. John has extensive experience as chairman or chief executive of organisations in the public, private and voluntary sector. A chartered accountant by training, he is currently the owner and chief executive of Astons Transport Ltd, which was previously the UK transport business of the Veolia Group. He was the UK representative of Veolia across all its businesses as well as being the Chairman of its transport businesses in Australasia and the UK.

Previously, John held senior positions in the rail industry, including being the Government’s Franchising Director, where he was responsible for the delivery of the initial franchising of Britain's 25 passenger train companies and their subsequent management. He has been an adviser to the Arbiter of the London Underground PPP contracts, and was a member of the Government's Commission for Integrated Transport. John has held chairman/chief executive roles in both the retail and media sectors.

He is extensively involved in charities, chairing the Board at St Martin-in-the-Fields Limited and the Westminster Abbey Foundation. He is also Chair of Trustees at both Care and Care for the Family.
