Kate asked her ex to leave as he was abusive – would come in drunk, go missing for days and Kate felt physically threatened.

It didn’t stop after he left as he continued to harass her for 6 months. Her self esteem dropped and she felt cut off from her friends.

Domentic abuse story

Things changed for Kate when she was referred to Action for Children and found she was not alone. Through attending the centre, her confidence has grown, she has taken part in lots of courses and support groups and has led some herself.

And what does 2½ year old Charlie think?

“The minute we cross the road, he gets excited. Charlie loves our local Action for Children centre, or ‘play book’ as he calls it. Even when it’s shut, he wants to go. The children just feel so safe there. Ask him what his favourite place is and ‘play book’ wins every time."
